25/05/18Protect your eyes from harmful UV rays all day, everyday

Summer has arrived and there is nothing we love more than to get outside in the sunshine. We all know that UV light is bad for our skin and apply sunscreen to protect ourselves, but we should not forget that it is also bad for our eyes. Overexposure to UV increases the risk of serious eye conditions including photokeratitis also known as ocular sunburn, cataracts and macular degeneration. The skin around the eye is also at risk from sun damage. Too much UV radiation can cause wrinkles, freckles and age the skin. The image below clearly reveals the shocking damage that UV radiation can have.

What makes UV such a danger? UV radiation is invisible and present all year round. Summer and winter, on sunny days and in overcast conditions, you still need protection. With these risks in mind, it is important to consider the proper protection required to keep our eyes healthy and looking young. Surprisingly on average only 1 in 5 people wear sunglasses when outside in the sun. With so many fakes available, if you are purchasing sunglasses outside a recommended optical practice, you cannot always be sure what level of UV protection you are getting.

The latest recommendation from the World Health Organisation is UV protection up to 400nm. In line with this, our reputable lens suppliers are increasingly incorporating UV blocking technology as a matter of routine. To name one, Zeiss has raised the bar by introducing sunglass level UV protection in their clear lenses. This development by Zeiss is fantastic news in the eye health sector, giving all spectacle wearers UV protection as the norm.

Of course we still need sunglasses when we are out in the sunshine. A dedicated pair of sunglasses will cover more skin around the eyes and tinted lenses give more clarity and comfort in bright light. Not forgetting that a stylish pair of sunglasses will always compliment your summer look! With our comprehensive range of sunglasses you will find something that suits any occasion. If you need prescription sunglasses, we can advise you on the best options available to give you full UV protection with or without polarisation.
